# Create user accounts in Microsoft 365

Organizations can **provision user accounts** in different ways depending on size, environment, and automation needs.

## 1\. **Microsoft 365 Admin Center**

* **Best for**: Small orgs or non-synced environments.
    
* **Interface**: Web portal or **Microsoft 365 Admin App** (mobile/tablet).
    
* **Steps**:
    
    1. Sign in → go to **Users > Active Users**.
        
    2. Select **Add a user** → complete wizard:
        
        * Basics (name, domain, password).
            
        * Product license(s).
            
        * Optional settings (roles).
            
        * Review & finish.
            
* **Benefit**: **Simplest method**, no advanced tools needed.

## 2\. **Import Multiple Users (CSV Bulk Upload)**

* **Best for**: When adding **large numbers of users at once**.
    
* **How it works**:
    
    * Prepare CSV file (Microsoft provides template/sample).
        
    * Upload via **Add multiple users** in Admin Center.
        
    * System verifies file → reports errors if any.
        
    * Set user options (sign-in status, location, licenses).
        
    * Results + temporary passwords emailed to specified recipient.
        
* **Benefit**: **Efficient mass creation**.

## 3\. **Windows PowerShell (Microsoft Graph PowerShell)**

* **Best for**: Advanced admins, automation, scripting.
    
* **Important**: Old PowerShell modules (**Azure AD, Azure AD Preview, MSOnline**) are **deprecated**. Use **Microsoft Graph PowerShell**.
    
* **Setup**:

    Import-Module Microsoft.Graph.Identity.DirectoryManagement
    Connect-MgGraph -Scopes 'User.ReadWrite.All'
    ```
    
* **Example**: Creating Allan Deyoung’s account

* **Benefit**: Powerful, automatable, supports bulk creation with scripts.

## 4\. **Directory Synchronization**

* **Best for**: Orgs with **on-premises Active Directory** (AD DS).
    
* **Tools**:
    
    * **Microsoft Entra Connect Sync**
        
    * **Microsoft Entra Cloud Sync** (⚠️ doesn’t support Exchange hybrid).
        
* **How it works**:
    
    * User accounts created in **on-prem AD** → synced to Microsoft Entra ID.
        
* **Limitation**:
    
    * Can’t create users in Admin Center or PowerShell directly. Must use **on-prem AD tools**.
